Lac April 2015

The Lac de Guerlédan,

Vidange 2015...

Map

The biggest lake in Brittany (or the smallest?)...
The Lac du Guerlédan is the biggest lake in Brittany at 300 hectares, where you can enjoy a variety of water sports (boating, water skiing, canoeing, fishing etc) and it is surrounded by walks and nature trails. However between April and October 2015 an exciting event is taking place – the lake is being drained! Why?The lake was created almost 100 years ago when a dam was built at the western end to facilitate the generation of hydroelectricity. Under French law dams have to be fully inspected every 30 years and 2015 witnesses the last ever full emptying (vidange) of the lake. A coffer dam is to be built and this will prevent the necessity of a full drainage ever happening again. People from all over France and some from abroad are expected to visit the ‘lake’ to see a scene that has been hidden for decades.

More information ...

The Guerlédan 2015 website, which has French text, has some interesting videos and pictures from the last vidange in 1985. More pitures and links to advice etc (again in French) can be found on the Vidange du barrage de Guerlédan 2015 site.
